Kids books about sex
One of the most common DMs I get from friends is a request for age appropriate sex ed books. Comprehensive sex education starts very early in childhood when we learn the names of our body parts. This is also the right time to learn that we don’t touch other people without their consent.
For the K-2 age group I recommend Yes! No! A First Conversation about Consent by Megan Madison, Jessica Ralli, and Isabel Roxas. This is available as a Board Book for the youngest children.
Another great K-2 book is It’s Not the Stork by Robie H. Harris and Michael Emberley. This is a book meant to be read by parents to young children and covers families, bodies and babies.
Robie H. Harris and Michael Emberley wrote a series of great sex ed books. The next one is for parents to read to their kids ages 7 and up. The title is It’s so Amazing and the focus is on the simplified biology of sexual reproduction and where babies come from.
If you have a child ages 10 and up approaching puberty, it’s time to buy It’s Perfectly Normal. This book is a fairly comprehensive resource and covers the changing body, relationships, and sexual health topics including STIs and pregnancy prevention.
Another great read for this age group is Wait, What? by Heather Corinna and Isabella Rotman. This is in comic book style and is a sweet LGBTQ inclusive resource about relationships, bodies and growing up.
If you’ve got a mature 15 yo or an older teen, I recommend Drawn to Sex: The Basics by Erika Moen and Matthew Nolan. Be aware that this book gets pretty graphic. It’s aimed at young people who are exploring their sexuality in practical ways. The information provided will help keep your kiddo safe as they go out into the world.
